Types of Mattress Filling Explained

Good modern mattresses are divided into two types: orthopedic and anatomical. Orthopedic mattresses provide proper support of the spine during sleep and relaxation of muscles, and anatomical in addition competently perceive the person’s weight and adjust to each bend of the body.

Any mattress can be springy or springless. Spring blocks, in turn, are divided into two types: dependent and independent. The dependent spring block is usually called “Bonnel” and consists of rigidly connected springs. The block “Bonnel” has long proven itself on the good side in terms of quality and price, but has one most important drawback: in addition to springs that perceive the load, squeezed and neighboring, on which actually load is not, so the so-called “hammock effect” can arise. Mattresses on the spring block “Bonnel” are usually bought for rented apartments, hotels, and hostels: where you need a strong and inexpensive spring mattress.

The block of independent springs consists of springs separated from each other. Each spring is “dressed” in a special fabric case. Thus, a block of independent springs can be precisely perceived load: only those springs on which the pressure is pressed are compressed. There are also several varieties of the block of independent springs:

Independent TFK Springs.

Contain an average of 256 springs per sq/m, the thickness of the wire 1.8-2.0 mm. The TFK unit will suit people whose weight does not exceed the average. Also, some manufacturers may make changes to the number of springs in a larger or smaller way;

Independent Springs S1000 (Multipocket).

 The unit contains 500 (on 1 sq/m) small diameter springs, a 1.4 mm section. The block has an increased orthopedic effect;

Block independent springs S2000 (Micro pack).

Contains 1000 (by 1 sq/m) small springs no more than 0.9-1.2 mm thick. It has a very high orthopedic effect and is perfect for people weighing more than 130 kg;

The duo spring unit (DS)

is also independent, and its distinctive feature is that inside the spring with a larger diameter is a spring with a smaller diameter. Thus, this block can also be called “spring in spring.” Smaller springs are staggered. The unit contains many springs (depending on the manufacturer): usually, it is 250/108 per sq/m, or 500/216. This design allows you to withstand significant loads and is ideal for couples with a big difference in weight;

The zonal spring block

consists of independent springs with different stiffness zones (e.g., shoulder area, lower back area, and leg area). There are several types of zoned spring blocks: 2, 3, 5, and 7 zones. The zonal unit can perceive and distribute the load as correctly as possible and is usually used in expensive anatomical mattresses;

The Hourglass spring block

is the patented base of the mattress from the Ascon factory. The block consists of independent springs shaped like an hourglass. Each spring contains three rigidity zones: in a place where the diameter of the spring is larger – the expansion zone (bottom and top), and in the middle (smaller diameter) narrowing zone. The larger the diameter of the spring, the easier it is to squeeze, and vice versa. As a result, mattresses on the spring block “Hourglass” can adequately perceive both small and large loads suitable for most people. RoszdravNadzor approves all models of mattresses with “hourglass.”

The springless models are

divided into two types: twisted into a roll and ordinary (unruly). The advantage of the mattress, which is delivered twisted in vacuum packaging, is easy further transportation to the cottage or to places with a narrow doorway, where the usual mattress will not pass. On the other hand, the mattress in the roll is placed in the interior of even a small car. After opening the packaging, the mattress takes its shape within 2-4 hours.

The mattresses are divided into natural, artificial, and mixed mattresses of natural materials, the most popular coconut coir, and natural latex.

Coconut coir

is a fiber that entangles a coconut to protect it when falling from a palm tree. The process of obtaining fiber is time-consuming: nuts are soaked in saltwater for a long time, and as a rule, all works are carried out by hand. However, that coconut coir lasted longer and did not crumble; it impregnated with natural latex. Coconut is the best filler that gives the mattress stiffness. A mattress with coconut can serve for decades. The material is well ventilated and withstands heavy loads.

Natural latex

is derived from the juice of a Brazilian heve tree (rubber tree). Latex gives the mattress softness, elasticity has a high anatomicalness, and is well ventilated. Due to people’s unique features fall asleep on such mattresses much faster, and sleep turns out to be healthy and strong.

Coconut coir and natural latex have the highest orthopedic effect.

Artificial fillers to increase rigidity used hollofaiber (stuttofeiber) and softness usually provide artificial latex (foam and its derivatives).

Hollofyber consists of non-woven high-density fibers. Each fiber in shape resembles a vertically positioned spring. The material can withstand heavy loads, has a good orthopedic effect, and can rightly be considered a competitor of the coconut copra.

Artificial latex (foam) is an elastic soft material of high strength, resistant to deformation and quickly taking its form. Its characteristics resemble its natural counterpart, but the cost will be much cheaper than and has gained its popularity as a filler for an orthopedic mattress. There are also foam fillers based on polyurethane with a micro-massage effect.

Memorex Foam is a soft porous material with a form memory effect. The material can take the shape of the whole body as correctly as possible, helps to relax and relieve tension. Mattresses using the material “memory” are called anatomical.

There are also mattresses with a mixed type of filling. For example, to reduce the cost of a mattress made of natural latex with medium rigidity to get the desired rigidity instead of coconut coir added a layer of hollofaiber and vice versa.

All artificial materials are hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly.
