At first glance, it seems impossible to wash the mattress at a new level. But don’t worry anymore. We’ll explain how to find a clean mattress.
What do I need to clean my mattress?
Nowadays, most memory-shaped foam mattresses have a removable blanket or mattress pad that can be easily machine-washed. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all mattresses, especially the older ones. The most serious tasks can also penetrate the inside of the mattress.
In this case, ask yourself two questions:
- Is your mattress less than 8 years old?
- Do you care about your mattress?
If you answer “yes” to these two questions, read our tips below. To do this, we invite you to consult our various tests and advice to sleepers!
The good news is that it is possible to wash memory foam mattresses to form. If you follow our advice, you will get good results. For this, you need some cleaning products and about 1 to 2 hours. You will then have to let your mattress dry thoroughly in the open air for 1 to 2 days.
- Vacuum with a soft brush
- Plastic-compatible cleaner
- White vinegar
- Hairdryer or fan
- A flat surface
The different steps to washing a foam mattress
Step 1: Clean the mattress with the vacuum cleaner
Start by cleaning the entire surface of your foam mattress with a vacuum cleaner. It would help if you did this with a brush or vacuum cleaner with a soft brush. This cleaning helps remove stuffed animals or dust before they become deeper into the mattress. It may be easier to use the vacuum cleaner by placing the mattress directly on the floor or even outside on a flat surface.
Step 2: Use the first detergent correctly
Start by filling a vaporizer with 1/3 of laundry and 2/3 of water. Shake well so that the laundry is well mixed with the water.
The next step is to put your mattress on a tarp, usually outdoors. Spray your mattress with your mixture until you have covered all sides. Then let the liquid rest on the mattress for 30 to 45 minutes and rinse with a watering can.
Step 3: Apply the second detergent.
For this third step, fill the vaporizer with 1/4 white vinegar and 3/4 water. Shake the solution well and apply it to the entire foam of the mattress. Then rinse with your watering can and make sure all the product has been removed from the mattress. The water that has the mattress has absorbed be removed by pressing the mattress. Be careful, however, not to twist or bend the mattress.
Step 4: Let the mattress dry.
To make the mattress dry properly, use a hairdryer or fan. However, they will not be able to dry the mattress in a few hours. This speeds up the drying process. Use them every 2 or 3 hours. You need to ventilate the room as much as possible to remove the moisture present. We recommend cleaning a mattress in the morning to have as much time as possible to dry.
Alternatively, you can let the mattress dry outside if the weather is nice or in a well-ventilated room. Your mattress should be dry in up to 2 days.
Consider asking for help. The memory-shaped foam will absorb a lot of water, making your mattress much heavier. You’ll be happy to be helped to move your mattress!
Clean your mattress with washing-up liquid
Don’t have all the items listed? You can also clean your mattress only with washing-up liquid. To do this, pour 10 drops of conventional dishwashing liquid into 1L of hot water. Then use a washcloth or sponge to clean the surface of the mattress. Be careful; it must be wrung out. Rinse your sponge regularly between washes. Finally, use dry towels or paper towels to remove moisture and excess water from the mattress.
Eliminate inlaid stains
You can also clean it with ammonia for tasks embedded in your mattress, such as mold stains. However, several precautions should be taken as the product can be toxic. If you use ammonia, you must be in a very airy room. To protect yourself, it is necessary to wear household gloves, glasses, and a mask.
Pour 5 to 10 cl of ammonia into 1 liter of hot water and use a sponge. Rub the encrusted stains with this liquid. Once all stains have been treated, clean your mattress with dishwashing liquid or dishwashing liquid and detergent mixture.
Remove blood stains
First, know that the longer you wait to wash your blood-stained mattress, the harder it will be to make these marks disappear.
To remove a blood stain from your mattress, we recommend moistening it with a sponge, a washcloth, or a damp cloth. Then put an effervescent aspirin lozenge in it.
Take an object, such as a glass or spoon, and make circular movements with the aspirin lozenge on the task or tasks present. Then moisten the area again to remove the particles from the aspirin.
For dried blood stains, you can also use a mixture of hot water and oxygenated water. A few drops are enough. If your hand is too heavy, the stain could foam, and the product could damage your mattress.

Time is running out; in fact, you must use a paper towel to absorb the liquid immediately.
To remove a coffee stain on your bedding, you need to act very quickly and not waste time. We recommend using coarse salt or rice grains, which are more effective than talc.
They will quickly absorb moisture and coffee on the mattress. Be careful, do not wet your mattress before placing salt or rice in it. You only place the ingredient on the stain, wait for it to absorb the coffee, and then vacuum it.
Remove urine stains
Sometimes a child pees in bed, so encrusted stains may appear on the mattress. It would help if you acted quickly by absorbing the liquid with towels.
A urine stain can penetrate deep into the materials depending on the amount of liquid that has leaked. Therefore, the area needs to be cleaned completely. If the cover is removable and washable, it will be easier for you.
Home remedies for cleaning a urine stain
